Why do we celebrate with balloons?

In the minutes before every EOB celebration, party volunteers swiftly unload a vehicle parked outside the hosting shelter. There are big, plastic bins to carry—each filled to the brim with hand-made decorations, game pieces, goody bags, party itineraries, balloons, and helium tanks.

Volunteers pluck handfuls of limp, rubber balloons from the bins and un-box the hefty tanks. It can be tedious work: turn the nozzle, fill them up (just enough, but not too much), tie tiny knots, secure with ribbon. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Suddenly, a sea of floating orbs floods the room with color. They accent the birthday boy or girl’s custom centerpiece. When it’s game time—suddenly—they’re snowballs and pebbles and animals. They’re post-celebration accessories, too: fastened gingerly to gift bags and the little wrists of partygoers.

And, sometimes, they’re just balloons—because families find it endlessly fun to use heads, shoulders, knees, and toes to keep them in the air.
